Part 1: Relationship Assessment This phase comprises four sessions:
- Session 1: The therapist initiates the process by meeting with the couple to understand the history of their relationship and introduce the basics of Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Both partners complete an online assessment to measure various aspects of relationship well-being.
- Sessions 2 & 3: Individual meetings with each partner to gather their personal histories and insights.
- Session 4: A meeting where the therapist discusses the assessment results, offers a recommended treatment plan, and introduces skills training and initial intervention exercises.
Part 2: Couples Therapy Once the assessment phase is complete, couples therapy begins. The number and duration of sessions are flexible, tailored to the couple’s specific needs and goals. These therapy sessions are structured, goal-oriented, and skill-based. Couples receive handouts and engage in exercises designed to yield effective and lasting results, leading to improved intimacy and enhanced relationship skills.
Many couples find the experience so beneficial that they choose to return for follow-up sessions six, twelve, and eighteen months after their initial therapy concludes. This ongoing support further reinforces the positive changes made during therapy and helps couples maintain a healthy and fulfilling relationship. The Gottman Method Couples Therapy offers a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to fostering lasting and positive changes in relationships.
